I joined Goodreads in 2015 but didn’t do much more than have a look around. Recently I’ve been looking through Goodreads and realised I needed to add the books I had read.
Our home is filled with books, some I’ve carted around with me for decades. Before I started what feels like my own library I used to haunt the local one. I still remember the excitement of turning thirteen and being able to take twelve books out at one time.
Packing for a two week holiday meant squeezing six or seven books, maybe more, into my suitcase; I’d still run out of something to read by day ten or so.
Then I discovered the kindle or, more accurately, my husband did. A few years back he said he wanted to get me one for Christmas. I politely refused. I’d never use one of those things. I love books, real books, the whisper of a turning page, the smell of paper and ink, the weight of all those words. Nope, no thank you very much.
He kept going on about it. I said no thank you, I pleaded, I begged, I DON’T WANT A KINDLE.
On Christmas Day I opened one of my presents. Yup, you got it. A kindle. I said a polite thank-you. When would I ever use this?
By Boxing Day my husband was shouting for me to come and join in the festivities and put the kindle down. I was obsessed. Downloading old favourites, reading the classics for free, discovering new authors.
I never go anywhere without my kindle and couldn’t imagine my reading life without it.
Back to my Goodreads “read” list. I am slowly working my way through adding in books I’ve read and loved. The list tells me several things, that I have an eclectic collection of books, love reading different genres and have found some well-loved favourites lurking on the real, and virtual, shelves. Time to take a trip down memory lane and re-read them. Now, which will be first?
P.S. Â The photo with this blog isn’t my house, honest!
