Lily is almost 30. She’s an only child who has recently bought out her parent’s flower shop – with a little financial assistance from them. She’s been engaged to Stuart for six years and their relationship has long lost its initial glow. While she works hard to make the florist her own, he spends his time teaching and providing little extras for the trophy wives at the golf club where he works and lives. Lily still lives at home with her parents, who are finding being retired rather duller than they expected and are taking their irritation out on each other. When Roger, Lily’s funny assistant, tells her to do something with her life and suggests she moves away from her warring parents to the vacant flat above the shop, she eventually agrees it’s the wisest thing to do.
Will is a gorgeous landscape gardener with a sadness about him that’s intriguing. He visits the shop a couple of times a week and one day plucks up the courage to ask Lily out for a drink so that he put a question to her that’s been bothering him. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, she thinks he’s asking her out on a date, she accepts and things progress from there.
I initially found the introduction to the various characters a little frustrating, wanting to get on with Lily’s story and discover more about Will and the mystery that he was hiding. But I soon became fond of her parents and more interested in their disintegrating marriage. I loved Will’s story, and Will – he’s gorgeous. I enjoyed the brother/sister-like relationship between Lily and her friend Simon and thoroughly disliked Stuart. I enjoyed watching Will and Lily’s relationship grow as they got to know each other and wending my way through their dramas to the beautiful, satisfying ending.
This is a romantic, sometimes sad, occasionally funny book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
